More than 70 horses and riders recently enjoyed a six-hour ride through pastures and gulches up to 4,000 feet above sea level on Mt. Haleakala’s southern slope to raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Tennessee. The ride began on Thompson Road in Keokea through OW Ranch, Ulupalakua Ranch to the Fleming Arboretum within the Puu Mahoe cinder cone. The event included a cowboy lunch at Puu Mahoe by John Thompson, a live auction and awards. “St Jude 2019 was made possible by generous donations from the Maui Cattle Co., Maui Soda, Morihara Store, Mike Vida of Feed & Farm, Ulupalakua, Haleakala and OW ranches, all of our participants, and those who generously donated for the kids at St. Jude,” said Jerry Thompson of Thompson Ranch, Maui’s Saddle Up founder. The Thompson family has organized Maui’s St. Jude Trail ride since 1992, generating more than $438,000 total in donations for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
